He received his MD degree in 1988 and PhD degree in 1993, both from the University of Zagreb. His research interests include the mechanisms of repair and regeneration and the role of neural stem cells after brain damage, particularly in the mouse model of stroke. He is the Head of the Section for Neurogenetics, Cytogenetics and Developmental Genetics at the Croatian Institute for Brain Research and Head of the Center for Electron Microscopy. Apart from teaching histology and embryology, Dr Gajović is involved in undergraduate and graduate education at two medical schools (Zagreb and Osijek) and at the University of Applied Health Studies in Zagreb. Dr Gajović was a member of the Management Board of the Croatian Medical Journal from 2005 to 2010, and in 2011 he was appointed Editor-in-Chief.
