Vpeljava fluorovih atomov v organske molekule lahko ugodno vpliva na njihovo biološko delovanje zaradi spremembe fizikalno-kemijskih in presnovnih lastnosti. Zlasti kiralni fluorirani alkoholi pridobivajo na pomembnosti npr. pri razvoju zdravil proti AIDSu (Efavirenz) in depresiji (Befloksaton), pa tudi kot napredni materiali za optoelektroniko ali kot kiralni reagenti. V svojem delu so raziskovalke in raziskovalci predstavili učinkovito in praktično pripravo doslej nedostopnih enantiomerno in diastereomerno čistih CF3-substituiranih diolov s tremi kiralnimi centri.
