Francesco G.B. De Natale was born in Genoa, Italy in 1964. He received the Laurea in Electronic Engineering from the University of Genoa in 1990, discussing a Thesis on advanced image compression techniques, awarded by IRI Institute (Premio di Laurea 1990). In 1990 he joined the Signal Processing and Understanding Group of the Dept. of Biophysical and Electronic Engineering (DIBE, University of Genoa) as a research assistant. In 1994 he obtained the Ph.D. in Telecommunication Engineering. In 1995-96 he was Visiting Professor at the University of Trento, Italy. From 1996 to 1999 he was Assistant Professor at the University of Cagliari, Italy, teaching courses on Telecommunications Systems and Networking.

At present he is Full Professor of Telecommunications at the University of Trento, where he coordinates the Bachelor (Laurea) and Master (Laurea Specialistica) Degrees in Telecommunications Engineering. Prof. De Natale is also Deputy Head of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DIT), where he leads the research activities of the Multimedia Communications Lab.

Prof. De Natale is appointed by the University of Trento as the representative within the Italian Group of Telecommunications and Information Theory (GTTI), and is member of the Management Board of the National Inter-University Consortium of Telecommunications (CNIT). He acted as an evaluator for the European Commission within the framework of the ESPRIT and IST R&D Programmes, and is an evaluator of the Province of Trento for industrial and SME projects.

The research interests of Prof. De Natale are focused on image and signal processing, with particular attention to multimedia data compression, processing and transmission. He was Publication Chair of the Tyrrhenian Workshop on Multimedia Communications in 1999, General Co-Chair of the Packet Video Workshop in 2000, Technical Program Co-Chair of the International Conference on Multimedia Services Access Networks (MSAN) in 2005, and Technical Program Co-Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (IEEE-ICIP) in 2005. In 1998 he was co-recipient of the IEEE Chester-Sall Best Paper Award. He is also referee for several major international journals in the field of telecommunications and signal processing. Prof. De Natale is a Senior Member of IEEE.
