Blaž Komac se je rodil leta 1974 v Šempetru pri Gorici. Maturiral je leta 1993 v Tolminu. Diplomiral, magistriral in doktoriral je v Ljubljani. Od leta 2000 dela na Geografskem inštitutu Antona Melika Znanstvenoraziskovalnega centra Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti, kjer je vodja Oddelka za naravne nesreče.
Ukvarja se predvsem s fizično geografijo, zlasti z geomorfologijo, geografijo naravnih nesreč in geografskimi informacijskimi sistemi. Od leta 2005 predava na Fakulteti za humanistične študije Univerze na Primorskem v Kopru in od leta 2011 vodi inštitutski Oddelek za naravne nesreče. Njegova bibliografija obsega več kot 290 enot, od tega je 6 znanstvenih monografij in 38 izvirnih in preglednih znanstvenih člankov.
Ima izkušnje z vodenjem temeljnih in aplikativnih projektov na nacionalni ravni. Sodeloval je pri izvedbi več evropskih projektov o naravnih nesrečah in vodil raziskovalno skupino (WP) v raziskovalnem projektu v 7. okvirnem programu EU.
Leta 2004 je bil upravnik, od leta 2005 pa je glavni urednik znanstvene revije Acta geographica Slovenica/Geografski zbornik, ki je vključena v Science Citation Index Expanded, ima pa tudiFaktor vpliva. Je tudi sourednik inštitutske knjižne zbirke Naravne nesreče.
Leta 2000 je za diplomo prejel Prešernovo nagrado za študente Univerze v Ljubljani, leta 2004 pa pohvalo Zveze geografov Slovenije.

Blaž Komac was born in 1974 in Šempeter pri Gorici. He finished high school in Tolmin in 1993 and graduated, received his master's and doctorate degree in Ljubljana. Since 2000, he has been working at the Anton Melik Geographical Institute, Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, where he is a chair of the Department of natural disasters.
He deals mainly with physical geography, particularly geomorphology, geography of natural hazards and with geographical information systems. Since 2005 he has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska in Koper and has been leading the Institute’s Department of natural disasters since 2011.
His bibliography includes more than 290 units, of which there are 6 scientific monographs and 38 original and review scientific papers.
He has experience with leading of national basic and applied projects for different institutions. He collaborated at several EU research projects on natural hazards and he is leading a research group responsible for a WP on risk education in an EU 7 framework programme research project CapHaz-Net. In 2004 he was a technical editor, and the editor-in-chief of the SCI scientific journal Acta Geographica Slovenica since 2005 (under his editorialship the journal received the Impact factor). He is also co-editor of the Institute book series on natural hazards.
In 2000 he received the Prešeren Student Award of the University of Ljubljana and was commended by the Association of geographers of Slovenia in 2004.
