Description

Vidni sistem je sestavljen iz štirih redov nevronov. Prvi red nevronov v vidni poti so fotoreceptorske celice v mrežnici, drugi red nevronov pa so bipolarne celice mrežnice, ki povezujejo fotoreceptorske celice z ganglijskimi celicami. Ganglijske celice so tretji red nevronov, ki zapustijo mrežnico po vidnem živcu in se v lateralnem genikulatnem jedru preklopijo na četrti red nevronov, ki končajo v vidnem centru v zatilnem delu možganov. Vidna zaznava temelji na pretvorbi svetlobe v električni tok, kar se v naravnem okolju odvija v zunanjih segmentih fotoreceptorjev. V kolikor so le-ti okvarjeni, je naravni električni tok možno nadomestiti z zunanjo električno stimulacijo.
