About

The conference was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia in the framework of the Green Group initiative, which also includes foreign ministers of Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Iceland, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

The event highlighted water and energy as critical resources for human, economic and social development. Demand for energy and water is increasing due to population growth and economic development. On the other hand, the world is already experiencing climate change, environmental degradation and increasing water scarcity.

Green economy is the new development paradigm, aimed at more efficient and environmentally sustainable use of natural resources. Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy resources is critical, particularly in climate change mitigation. However, water management is equally important. Hydropower is important as a renewable energy source and water is also a key resource for preservation of natural ecosystems and ecosystem services.

Energy is needed for providing water to households, agriculture and industry. To meet future water needs, the demand for energy will also increase. Reducing the carbon footprint of water treatment is yet another challenge of the water-energy nexus.
