The idea of a "clash of civilizations" has become popular to explain tensions between the Mulsim and the Western worlds---particularly since the September 11 attacks in 2001. But how useful is this black-and-white concept to help us understand the multi-faceted relations between Muslims and the West? On further investigation, the reality seems much more complicated.
