Case-Based Reasoning, or CBR, is a technique that can be applied to games to create compact and efficient models for agents and NPCs. CBR is typically used in domains where a full model of the world is infeasible, such as playing card games or strategy games. In these cases, it can be used to perform model selection on real input data to determine the best action to take. In this post, I'll explain how to use CBR in some simple game-playing scenarios. The basic CBR algorithm is broken down into three steps: retrieval, reuse, and revision. The retrieval step attempts to find the most similar cases in the case base that match some new instances we're trying to classify. The reuse step uses those prior cases to decide what action (or class) should be taken. Finally, the revision step takes real action and uses it to update the retrieved cases so that they are more accurate in the future.
