In the last decade, we have witnessed a tremendous progress in telecommunications. Telecommunications have become a part of nearly every aspect of our everyday lives. Broadband access is now available to most households in the western world. The paradigm ‘any place, any time’ is becoming a reality. We are no longer satisfied with simple mobile telephone calls. We use our mobile devices also for banking, shopping, navigation, entertainment and many other things.
We expect an even greater progress in the near future. We have a vision of immersive communications and telepresence, which would give us a much greater quality of experience, the experience of actually being together in the same room with the person we are speaking with. We are talking about intelligent homes, internet of things, sensor networks, virtual reality, augmented reality and much more.
All these require even more reliable communications and even more bandwidth available to each user. As the resources are limited, we have to exploit them in the best possible way. Our research program ‘Algorithms and optimization methods in telecommunications’ tries to cope with these demands. New approaches are needed in all aspects of telecommunications.
