Na vseh področjih človekovega delovanja smo priča razliki med količino podatkov, ki se shranjujejo na elektronskih medijih, ter človeško sposobnostjo interpretiranja teh podatkov. Statistična obdelava podatkov nam tipično omogoča preverjanje danih hipotez, novejše metode umetne inteligence pa omogočajo, da iz podatkov avtomatsko izluščimo nove hipoteze, interpretacije in spoznanja. Uporabo takih metod odkrivanja zakonitosti v podatkih bomo ilustrirali na podatkih o branosti, gledanosti in poslušanosti slovenskih medijev (Mediana GBP).
